In Spanish club, we learned a little about Xochimilco, a city about 50 miles south of Mexico City. This area of Mexico still uses canals and rivers and their main mode of transportation. This was the norm for the indigenous people of Mexico before the Spanish arrived. A very popular tourist attraction in Xochimilco allows you to rent a colorful raft and take a tour. On the tour, people visit a large flower market as well as floating vendors and mariachis along the way.
To practice directions in Spanish, we spent the day outside and played pon la cola al burro (pin the tail on the donkey). The walkers had to keep their eyes closed and where a mask so they couldn't see where they were going. Their partners had to direct them in Spanish.
The kindergarteners and first graders made animals masks. I took their pictures to put in a class book, our own version of Oso Pardo, Oso Pardo.
